The Instructional Development Specialist - Instructional Designer plays a vital role within the Center for Teaching Excellence, providing course reviews and expert instructional support to faculty and instructors in designing effective, engaging, and inclusive instruction across in-person, hybrid, and online learning environments. This position focuses on applying sound pedagogical principles, research-based practices, and innovative instructional design strategies to improve student learning outcomes and faculty success.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative and creative problem-solver, well-versed in instructional theory and best practices, who can lead projects, mentor graduate assistants, and develop resources and training to support teaching and learning excellence at SIUC.
Examples of Duties
• Consult with faculty and teaching assistants on course design, development, and improvement for online courses and programs.
• Identify instructional needs and recommend strategies to enhance online teaching and learning
• Conduct online course reviews using OSCQR or other quality standards, with emphasis on accessibility and Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI).
• Support faculty in all modalities (online, hybrid, HyFlex, face-to-face) with instructional development and LMS-based content improvements.
• Design, develop, and evaluate instructional and assessment strategies to foster engagement and improve learning outcomes.
• Integrate best practices and appropriate technology solutions to support learning and motivation.
• Stay current with research, technologies, and trends in instructional design and online education.
• Supervise graduate assistants supporting LMS operations and instructional projects.
• Design and facilitate workshops, training, and resources on online teaching, pedagogy, and educational technology.
• Collaborate with campus stakeholders to address student learning, engagement, and assessment goals.
• Contribute to the strategic initiatives of SIU Online & Extended Campus and the Center for Teaching Excellence
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy
AND
Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
OR - Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities
AND
Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
