Emory’s Office of the General Counsel seeks a health care attorney with significant transactional and regulatory experience to join its talented legal team as an Associate General Counsel. The Associate General Counsel will join an outstanding group of teammates to provide strategic legal counsel on complex regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters impacting one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and the largest healthcare provider in the state of Georgia. This attorney will support Emory Healthcare’s hospitals, physician practices, ancillary providers, and clinically integrated network in navigating federal and state healthcare laws while facilitating business transactions that advance our mission of excellence in patient care, education, and research.

Are you ready?
The Associate General Counsel’s duties will include the following key responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance:
§ Advise on federal and state healthcare laws and regulations, including the federal Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute and relevant state fraud and abuse laws, HIPAA, and EMTALA
§ Provide counsel on compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation, state licensure requirements, and Joint Commission standards
§ Support the development and implementation of compliance programs, policies, and procedures to ensure adherence to applicable laws and regulations
§ Assist with investigations and responses to government inquiries or enforcement actions
§ Assist with drafting physician contracts and advising on relevant regulatory considerations
§ Monitor and interpret emerging regulatory changes and advise leadership on operational impact and risk mitigation strategies
Transactional Support:
§ Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of healthcare-related agreements (e.g., professional services, affiliation, joint ventures, vendor contracts, telehealth, data-sharing, and business associate agreements)
§ Counsel on mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships within the health system, including:
Conducting legal due diligence to identify regulatory, compliance, and contractual risks
Advising on transaction structure to ensure compliance with healthcare laws and regulations
Drafting and negotiating definitive agreements, ancillary documents, and integration plans
Coordinating with internal stakeholders and external advisors to facilitate smooth transaction execution
Providing guidance on post-transaction integration, including physician alignment, licensure, and operational compliance
Contract Drafting and Supply Chain Collaboration:
§ Draft, review, and negotiate contracts for goods and services, including agreements with vendors, suppliers, and service providers
§ Work closely with Emory Healthcare’s Supply Chain and Digital teams to ensure contracts align with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and risk management standards
§ Provide legal guidance on health care regulatory matters as they relate to vendor contracting
§ Support strategic sourcing initiatives and advise on legal implications of supply chain decisions
Collaboration & Education:
§ Work closely with legal teammates, executives and operational leaders to implement practical solutions
§ Provide updates and training on emerging healthcare laws and regulations
We are looking for candidates who:
§ Have a minimum of ten years of legal experience in the health care field
§ Work well on a team and bring a spirit of engagement, enthusiasm, and innovation to their work
§ Have outstanding verbal and written communication skills
§ Display high levels of emotional intelligence, including kindness, empathy, optimism, and self-awareness
§ Approach work with a commitment to excellence, intellectual curiosity, strong work ethic, and integrity
§ Have excellent judgment, client counseling, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills
§ Have a license to practice law in a U.S. state, and excellent academic credentials
§ Have previous experience with academic medical centers, physician group practices, health care delivery systems, and/or in-house legal departments
Where will I work?
Candidates who live in or are willing to relocate to Atlanta, Georgia, where our Atlanta-based team members are in the office a minimum of two days a week, are preferred, but we will consider remote candidates.
